New Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 to get 671kW

US supercar primed for twin-turbo V8 hybrid and herculean power

The next Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 will come with an advanced twin-turbocharged V8 hybrid powertrain that will produce an incredible 900hp (671kW), it has been revealed.

According to Motortrend, the performance flagship of the all-new mid-engine C8 Corvette supercar range will see the ZR1 adopt a twin-turbo flat-plane-crank dual-overhead-cam V8 from the new C8.R racer with an additional power-boosting hybrid system.

Citing a 'high-placed' source, the US mag says the senior GM official says that the hybrid powertrain will "fill in torque gaps" left by the Z06's V8.

2020 chevrolet corvette stingray 056 ife7 5d4u

It's not been confirmed whether the ZR1 will share the C8.R's 5.5-litre displacement but the hybrid system is believed to involve packaging a small electric motor between the engine and transmission.

It's rumoured an additional pair of electric motors driving the front wheels will also be adopted, providing all-wheel drive and allowing for torque vectoring to deliver more agile handling.

Mototrend has tipped the engineers will mount the batteries and control modules either in the space found between the seats and the engine or low down in the C8's front boot.

2020 chevrolet corvette stingray 025 qe16 8ae7

Because there's a lack of space the hybrid system, which has been tuned specifically to boost performance, it will be powered by a compact battery -- so it's unlikely to provide for a pure-electric range.

There's no word on when GM plans to introduce its new ZR1 but it could be as soon as late next year.

The standard Corvette, meanwhile, is set to arrive at selected Holden dealerships in Australia from late 2020 or early 2021.

The best remote control cars are fast, sturdy, and look really slick swooping around your driveway or the park. RC cars have gotten more sophisticated in the past several years, and new technology means more stable signals from the remote to the car, chassis built from more durable material, and much higher speeds than the previous generation. They great for practically any kid, especially those that enjoy playing outside or love cars, but they're also the perfect gift for any adult that still has that childlike sense of wonder where remote-controlled vehicles and exhilarating speed are concerned.

The Rundown

Featuring a powerful motor, all-alloy frame, anti-skid tires, and immense rock-climbing power.

With a pistol-grip joystick that's a good size for smaller hands.

With a simple, two-button design, bright colors and plenty of noises to keep a toddler entertained.

Built specifically with speed in mind — it can reach speeds of up to 25 miles per hour.

This model can reach speeds up to 12 miles per hour, perfect for younger kids.

If you've never owned an RC car before, this is a great entry point.

A great car for the price.

Bezgar Remote Control Car

Bezgar's RC car is beautiful little machine that doesn't sacrifice performance for aesthetics. It packs a powerful motor that allows it to reach up to 25KM/H (around 15MPH), but its rugged all-alloy frame means it'll hold up to hard collisions, even at top speed. It's also significantly bigger than many RC cars, 1/14th scale compared to the broadly adopted 1/18th.

The Bezgar even has built-in shock absorbers to keep it moving over rough terrain, and fully charges in under three hours. It's even got a lightbar stretched across the roof above the seats, so you can keep cruising after the sun goes down.

Battery Voltage: 2x6V 800mAH | Top Speed: 25 km/h | Drive Mode: 2WD | Charging Time: 2.5 Hours

Maisto RC Rock Crawler Extreme

Maisto RC Rock Crawler Review

The Maisto Rock Crawler Extreme handles off-road trails and driveways with aplomb and can keep kids engaged for hours. Built with three motors to help handle rough terrains like grass and rock, the Rock Crawler Extreme tackles it all with large tires, a full suspension, and four-wheel drive.

Supported by a durable frame that can handle some crashing and rolling around, the Maisto achieves a kid-friendly top speed of around five miles per hour making it manageable for kids learning to control the vehicle. The pistol-grip joystick is a good size for smaller hands and includes a trigger for moving forward or reverse and a circular control toggle for changing direction. It requires six AA batteries, giving the Maisto a longer runtime without the constant need for recharging.

Battery Voltage: 6AA Batteries | Top Speed: 20 km/h | Drive Mode: 4WD | Charging Time: N/A

"One of the nice perks is that of the slow pace and heavily treaded tires is that the car almost never loses control." — Rebecca Isaacs, Product Tester

Holy Stone RC Cartoon Race Car

Holy Stone RC Cartoon Race Car Review

While the adults get to have most of the fun with remote control cars, kids are not without their own options. The Holy Stone RC cartoon race car doesn't go off-road and it doesn't come waterproof, but this remote control car for those 18 months and up is the perfect beginner's model for young children. Featuring two-channel direction with forward, reverse, left and right, there are also honking sounds, as well as music and flashing headlights.

Additionally, there's a removable race car driver that kids can take out and play with separately and then put back when they want to drive around the house. With a simple, two-button design, bright colors and plenty of noises to keep a toddler entertained, the cartoon race car will bring hours of joy. Three AAA batteries are required to power the car and two AA batteries are needed for the remote.

Battery Voltage: 3AA Batteries | Top Speed: 5 km/h | Drive Mode: 4WD | Charging Time: N/A

"We didn't have to swap the batteries at all, despite 20-30 minutes of usage per day." — Rebecca Isaacs, Product Tester

Kid Galaxy Ford F150

Galaxy Ford f150 Remote Control Truck Review

The Kid Galaxy Platinum Ford F150 is built specifically with speed in mind—it can reach speeds of up to 25 miles per hour. Whether your little one is looking to get into RC car racing or just wants something faster than the average hobby car, this downsized pickup truck is one of the best remote control cars around. The 20V lithium-ion battery is rechargeable and provides up to an hour of playtime. You can also swap it out with a 20V Black & Decker, DeWalt, Porter-Cable, or Stanley power tool battery for more power options and longer play.

This RC car requires no assembly, so it's ready to go right out of the box. The wide, rubber wheels can handle almost any surface from sand, dirt, gravel, and pavement. The best improvement over the previous model is that the Platinum Ford F150 features a safety breaker that shuts down the car if the battery or motor gets too hot, preventing damage to the car and reducing fire hazards.

Battery Voltage: 20V | Top Speed: 48 km/h | Drive Mode: 4WD | Charging Time: 2.5 Hours

"If you're looking to get into it without breaking the bank, the Galaxy Ford f150 is a large and powerful RC car (or rather, truck) with high top speed and long range." — Rebecca Issacs, Product Tester

JEYPOD RC Car

The JEYPOD RC car is another option for both kids and adults looking for a way to get into RC car racing. This model can reach speeds up to 12 miles per hour, perfect for younger kids to keep up with while also getting a feel for more advanced RC car operation.

This car comes with two rechargeable batteries so you can keep one charged while you use the other. Each battery gives you about 30 minutes of play and can reach a full charge in as little as 90 minutes. The frame of this RC car is made to be highly maneuverable. Its small wheels make taking sharp turns a breeze, and the compact frame also makes it perfectly travel-size.

The large rubber tires can take on a variety of surfaces from pavement to gravel and dirt, while the battery and motor compartment are splash resistant, so you don't have to worry about driving through small puddles.

Battery Voltage: 2x3.6V 700mAh | Top Speed: 20 km/h | Drive Mode: 2WD | Charging Time: 90 Minutes

Double E Monster Truck

If you're relatively new to remote control vehicles and finding yourself a bit baffled by all of the options and features that are available, the DOUBLE E Monster is the best remote control car for you. It's a well-rounded RC truck that checks a lot of boxes for the person who wants a solid remote control toy that's affordable and easy to figure out, and it packs in some of the best battery life we've seen as well. It's also got a great classic monster truck design that kids will love.

The 1:12 scale means it's on the larger side, but it can also tackle just about any terrain. It's great for both off-road use on rocks and gravel but it can motor along really well on streets and sidewalks too. It's a four-wheel-drive vehicle, with separate front and rear motors, lots of torque to spare, and an independent suspension system so it won't be shaken up on even the roughest surfaces.

The best part of the Double E Monster, however, is that you won't be stuck replacing batteries; it sports an internal rechargeable 6V 800 mAh pack that can be recharged from any USB power source. This saves you the trouble of having to carry around an extra power adapter; you can recharge it from your laptop or use your mobile phone or tablet charger. Even better, a single charge (which takes about two hours) provides up to 40 minutes of running time, making it one of the longest-lasting RC cars we've seen in this price range.

Battery Voltage: 2x6V 800mAh | Top Speed: 6 km/h | Drive Mode: 4WD | Charging Time: 90 Minutes

Growsland Remote Control Car

If you spend even a few minutes searching for remote control cars on Amazon, you'll be absolutely amazed by how much you can actually spend if you ever decide to get into the hobby in a serious way. However, there are some pretty good cheap and cheerful options available as well, so there's really no need to break the bank when getting started. Among these, Growsland's little supercar comes in at under $20.

With a classic racing sports car design, the Growsland isn't going to be climbing any rocks or doing any offroading, but it handles great both indoors and outdoors on streets and sidewalks, and the 1:18 scale means it's small enough to motor around indoors without knocking around your furniture or freaking out your pets. It can get up to a pretty reasonable speed of around 8 mph.

A simple two-joystick remote makes it easy for younger kids to operate, although it's worth noting that the use of the older 27 MHz frequency for the remote means that you won't be able to race two of the same cars in close proximity as the remotes will interfere with each other. The car and remote will also require you to supply your own set of six AA batteries, but we don't think that's a serious omission considering the price tag here.

Battery Voltage: 4AA Batteries | Top Speed: 16 kp/h | Drive Mode: 2WD | Charging Time: N/A

Final Verdict

For a great all-around RC car for kids or adults, Bezgar's rugged offering (view at Amazon) is a no-brainer.

FAQ

  • Which remote control car brands are the best?

As you can tell from the diversity of brands on our list, there are a lot of companies making excellent RC cars these days. That said, some of the most reliable models come from established brands like Holy Stone or international toy behemoths like LEGO.

  • How fast can remote control cars go?

Just as with qualities like size and battery life, the speed of RC cars can vary wildly. In general, the range starts around 10MPH for entry-level vehicles but can top 100MPH for high-end cars that mimic dragsters.

  • What are hobby grade or toy grade remote control cars?

Hobby-grade RC vehicles are generally much higher quality than toy-grade equivalents and are usually considerably more expensive as a result. As a rule, hobby-grade cars will be constructed of more premium (often more durable) materials and will perform better in terms of speed and battery life than less expensive alternatives. Hobby-grade cars are generally more appropriate for adult enthusiasts, while toy-grade vehicles are aimed more at a younger market.

What to Look For in a Remote Control Car

Age Range

Perhaps the most important consideration when buying a remote control car is the age of the person (or people) who'll be using it most. If the car is for a young child, you may not want a feature-rich model with high top speed. But if it's for a tween, teenager, or even an adult, the option you select can be more complicated.

Lifewire

Battery Life

There's nothing worse than setting up a new piece of technology just to have it run out of batteries before you know it. That's why paying attention to battery life (in addition to keeping a set of spares handy if its battery isn't rechargeable) is smart. It's also worth noting that a vehicle with more features will drain a battery more quickly.

Price

You'd be surprised at how much you can pay for a remote control car if you want one that's fast, durable, and packed with features. That's why it's important to prioritize what's really important to you and pay attention to the price tag.

FAQ: Where are all these precise accelerations data coming from ?

specs interline

The times show how fast a car accelerates on high gears, without gear reduction. The lower the times, the drive is more relaxing and driver less often needs to change gears during overtaking or hill climbing. Practical tip: if the 60-100 km/h on 4th is higher than 11 sec and 80-120 km/h on 5th higher than 15 sec (or higher than 19 sec on 6th), the car will be felt as rather slowly reacting and will require downshifting very often in road conditions.
In case of automatic transmission the values are shown for the manual mode, if such is available in the car.
